THE HISTORY OF
PUTNAM CITY SCHOOLS MUSEUM
This site was created to showcase some of the items that will be in the future Putnam City School District Museum
The Putnam City School District Museum, a dream for many years by many alumni, has found a home. The School District has provided a building at 4101 N. Grove, Warr Acres, OK, at the corner of N.W. 40th and Grove Ave.
The Museum will begin operations under the auspices of the Putnam City High School Alumni Association. A committee of alumni is in the process of designing ways to preserve and display the great history and memorabilia of the Putnam City School District legacy for former and future graduates and students.
The gathering of Putnam City memorabilia began in 1984, spearheaded by Gloria Porter Quaid (1963) and joined by Jeanette Caufield Horton Hepp (1946) and Iva Horton Gilliland (1936). The committee spent numerous hours tracking down, collecting and displaying items donated by PC alumni. The articles were later moved to the Arnett Building for storage. The Putnam City Alumni Association, is now in the process of bringing them back for alumni and visitors to view, in an easily accessible facility.
While the committee is working on preparing the building, a group is also compiling the history of the schools in the District into one body of work. A movie/slide show will be made to incorporate visual elements of the history. Future ideas include building interactive displays, which will bring the history to life. Due to the number of donated items already collected, and the number of many more hoped for items in the future, displays will be created with items that are rotated, so that fresh displays will be presented on a regular basis.
When the building is turned over to the Museum Committee, it will hopefully only need minor renovations.
One of the biggest challenges, at first, will be the start-up costs associated with preparing the building. Foremost, we will need money to buy paint and materials needed to prepare the building for displaying the memorabilia already collected. Later, we will need desks, filing cabinets, display cabinets, library tables, chairs, etc. We will also need volunteers to arrange display cases and arrange exhibits. Volunteers are also be needed to act as hosts, when the building is ready to open to the public. We need and welcome your input.
