The Putnam City School District Preservation Society, a dream for many years by many alumni, is close to finding a new home. Soon after the beginning of the school year, the School District will provide space in a building, which once housed the Wagner's Store and then the Candy Box. It is located at 4101 N. Grove, on the corner of N.W. 40th Street and Grove Avenue in Bethany, Oklahoma.

The Preservation Society will begin operations under the auspices of the Putnam City High School Alumni Association. A committee of alumni is in the process of designing ways to preserve and display the great history and memorabilia of the Putnam City School District legacy for former and future graduates and students.

The gathering of Putnam City memorabilia began in 1984, spearheaded by Gloria Porter Quaid (1963) and joined by Jeanette Caufield Horton Hepp (1946) and Iva Horton Gilliland (1936). The committee spent numerous hours tracking down, collecting and displaying items donated by PC alumni. The articles were later moved to the Arnett Building for storage. The Putnam City Alumni Association, is now in the process of bringing them back for alumni and visitors to view, in an easily accessible facility.
While the committee is looking at preparing the building, a group is also compiling the history of the schools in the District into one body of work. A movie/slide show will be made to incorporate visual elements of the history. Future ideas include building interactive displays, which will bring the history to life. Due to the number of donated items already collected, and the number of many more hoped for items in the future, displays will be created with items that are rotated, so that fresh displays will be presented on a regular basis.
Although the Alumni Association doesn't have an exact move-in date, it is now in the process of being renovated and furnished. One of the biggest challenges, at first, will be the start-up costs associated with preparing the building. Foremost, we will need money to buy paint and materials needed to prepare the building for displaying the memorabilia already collected. Later, we will need desks, filing cabinets, display cabinets, library tables, chairs, etc. We will also need volunteers to arrange display cases and arrange exhibits. Volunteers will also be needed to act as hosts, when the building is ready to open to the public. The current Preservation Society Committee has not decided on an opening date, because of the variables now being worked out, but the success will ultimately depend on the number of volunteers who are willing to help staff the Preservation Society building. We need and welcome your input.
